The test

What is a coronary calcium score?

A coronary calcium scan is a low-dose CT scan of the heart. It looks for calcified plaque - hardened fatty deposits - in the coronary arteries that supply your heart muscle with blood.

The images produce a number called an Agatston score. Broadly, a score of zero means no calcified plaque was detected, and higher scores reflect more plaque. Doctors use the score alongside your history, blood pressure and cholesterol to build a picture of your cardiovascular risk - often years before any symptoms appear.

Your score is interpreted by a doctor in the context of your overall health. It is one input into a risk conversation, not a diagnosis on its own.

Who it's for

Risk factors for heart disease

Some risk factors you can change, others you can't. The more that apply to you, the more useful a clearer picture of your arteries can be.

  • Age

Risk rises steadily as we get older

  • Family history

    Heart disease in close relatives

  • High blood pressure

    Extra strain on artery walls

  • High cholesterol

    A driver of plaque build-up

  • Smoking

    Current or long-term past smoking

  • Diabetes

    High blood sugar over time

  • Weight & inactivity

    Little regular movement

  • Diet

High in saturated fat, salt and sugar

  • Chronic stress

Ongoing high stress and poor sleep

Even people who feel healthy can have significant plaque build-up - which is why screening exists.
